EARTHY ELEGANCE

Hoboken, NJ

The original kitchen in this Hoboken condo had a low ceiling, inexpensive cabinets,

inadequate counterspace and very little storage.

It was dim, cramped, badly ventilated and  although there was a pass-through into the dining area, the opening was obscured by cabinetry.

The clients felt cramped and isolated, especially when entertaining.

What they craved was a more functional kitchen that provided ease of movement and everything they needed for efficient food preparation, as well as a brighter, more open space.

Air quality was improved by raising the ceiling and properly ventilating the hood outside to keep the air fresh during cooking. Layers of light brighten the small space and since the kitchen has no exterior windows, a sunny glow is achieved by bouncing light off the ceiling via fiber optic cable.  All lighting is energy efficient and on dimmer switches to further extend bulb life. The backsplash tile was custom-colored to tie together the granite countertop and porcelain floor tile.

Stainless appliances bring modern, functional style to the space and are brought down to earth by the dark, maple cabinets.

A new garbage disposal allows the homeowners to easily dispose of vegetable scraps during meal prep.

Glass inserts create lightness in the wall cabinets and there is now plenty of storage in the form of a Super Susan, roll-out spice rack, drawers for pots and pans plus, a large cabinet which opens into the dining area for linens and serving pieces.

Storage and work space were increased with the addition of base cabinetry along the back wall, made possible by enlarging the room by a mere 18".

This new run of cabinetry allows for a contiguous counter, which also spans the pass through into the dining area.

The pass through - once a dark, cramped corner of the kitchen - is now a bright and spacious counter for serving, as well as for visiting with guests during meal prep.

The wine rack - within arm's reach - allows this area to double as a wine bar.

So raise a glass and say "Sláinte!" (to your health).
